Minutes from the mainland but a million miles away, Kangaroo Island is a sanctuary for wildlife and natural, rugged beauty. Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves, home to native wildlife like sea lions, koalas and diverse bird species

In the desert of the South Australian outback, in one of Australia's hottest climates, is the town of Coober Pedy. In a bid to avoid the heat, much of it has been built underground. Admire the lunar-like landscape, which has been the backdrop for many movies, including Mad Max Beyond ThunderdomeThe Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Red Planet. Coober Pedy is also known as the Opal Capital of the World, and there are plenty of opportunities to purchase the pretty gemstones.

Fri: Jan 31, 2020: ADELAIDE / KANGAROO ISLAND
This morning the main tour comes to an end as you transfer from the Barossa Valley to the Adelaide International Airport.  From here a short flight takes you to Kingscote and the lush and picturesque “Kangaroo Island”.  Off shore 112 km southwest of Adelaide, it is ‘just across the water but a world away’. There really are not enough adjectives to accurately describe the beauty of Kangaroo Island.  It is an island with 509 km of coastline of pristine beaches, with native bushland, wildlife, adventure & exploring. And the sunsets can take your breath away.  Check into hotel for a 2-night stay. [B]

Sat: Feb 01, 2020: KANGAROO ISLAND
Explore the natural highlights and wildlife of Kangaroo Island today.  Admire the playful fur seal colony at the “Seal Bay Conservation Park”.  Join a knowledgeable National Park ranger for a stroll along the beach, keeping an eye out for wild Australian sea lions. Stop for a delicious two-course lunch at “Vivonne Bay Bistro”, located in the beautiful Australian bush land. Afterwards, walk among the eucalyptus trees, keeping an eye out for koalas at “Hanson Bay Sanctuary”.  In the afternoon, encounter Australian wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and echidnas at “Flinders Chase National Park”. Tour the park and walk along the rugged southern coastline. Admire the beauty of the majestic “Remarkable Rocks” and then enjoy the “Admirals Arch Boardwalk”, a natural nursery and safe haven for fur seals. Return to your hotel for the night. [B/L]

Sun: Feb 02, 2020: KANGAROO ISLAND / ADELAIDE
Enjoy a Nature and Wildlife tour today. Travel to the western section of the island and discover the remarkable Flinders Chase National Park, one of the oldest and most important national parks in South Australia. The park incorporates almost 20 per cent of the island and much of it is a Wilderness Protection Area, home to a variety of fauna and flora unique to Kangaroo Island. Enjoy the opportunity to walk through the park in search for kangaroos, wallabies and a variety of birdlife. See at close range some of the 10,000 healthy New Zealand fur seals in their colony at Cape du Couedic and discover the formation of the Remarkable Rocks. These large granite boulders balance dramatically on the cliff edge, which plunges 75 metres into the turbulent Southern Ocean below. At Admirals Arch see where the powerful forces of nature have cut through the headland to create this natural geological formation. Admire the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, established in 1909, in the far south-west corner of the park. During the day koalas can be observed peacefully existing in their treetop habitat. By special permit, enter the Kelly Hill Conservation Park to see kangaroos and other native wildlife emerge from the safety of the bushland to graze on the open plains. Visit Point Ellen at Vivonne Bay, providing you with spectacular views of the Southern Ocean and white sandy beaches. Vivonne Bay offers five kilometres of untouched white sandy beaches and the clearest water you will ever see. Later this afternoon, transfer to the local airport for the flight back into the city of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.  Adelaide is simply enchanting, with a treasure trove of shopping, fine arts, and outdoor activity.     [B/L]

Mon: Feb 03, 2020: ADELAIDE / COOBER PEDY
This morning, board a flight to Coober Pedy, the opal capital of the world as it produces more opal than any other place in the world.  Situated 846 km north of Adelaide, Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called "dugouts", which are built in this fashion due to the scorching daytime heat.  The landscape features waste that is excavated from opal mines and opal mining machinery silhouetted against the horizon. Check into an underground hotel for a 2-night stay. [B/D]

Tues: Feb 04, 2020: COOBER PEDDY
Coober Pedy gives a new meaning to the word ‘Downunder”.  On the surface, the place looks pretty deserted with just a few hotels, randomly placed old mining equipment, a golf course and no grass.  In fact, around 3,500 people live there and 60 % live below the surface in homes burrowed out of caves.  The tour today visits underground homes, churches, Museum and mine. At an abandoned opal field, fossick for your own opal.   In the afternoon, head out of town to view the moon-like landscape, the “Dog Fence”, which stretches across Australia and the “Mica Fields”.  Return to your hotel later in the afternoon.  [B/L]

Wed: Feb 05, 2020:  COOBER PEDY / ADELAIDE
After breakfast, free time before departing from the starkness of Coober Pedy and flying back to Adelaide. Passengers flying back to North America will overnight once again in Adelaide.  Passengers traveling to other points with-in Australia will have a connecting flight in Adelaide this same day. [B]
